Kathmandu Valley is not a single city. It is a cultural landscape shaped by ancient trade, Newar craftsmanship, royal courts, Hindu and Buddhist traditions, festivals and dense neighborhood life.
The UNESCO World Heritage property contains seven Monument Zones: the Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur; Swayambhu and Boudhanath; and the sacred complexes of Pashupatinath and Changu Narayan.
The three historic cities

Kathmandu
Begin with the old royal square, then look beyond it: market streets, neighborhood shrines, bahals, Thamel’s energy and the living city around the monuments.
Best for first orientation and layered city walks.
Patan (Lalitpur)
Known for metalwork, courtyards, temples and one of the Valley’s finest palace ensembles. Slow down and explore lanes beyond Durbar Square.
Best for art, architecture and compact walking.
Bhaktapur
A historic city of brick streets, public squares, temples, pottery and traditional urban fabric. Early morning and late afternoon reveal a quieter side.
Best for atmosphere and a longer heritage visit.

Bhaktapur
Brick lanes, palace squares, temples and Newar craftsmanship in a living historic city.
Pashupatinath
An active Hindu sacred complex on the Bagmati River. Visit with particular care around worship and cremation areas.
Boudhanath
A major center of Tibetan Buddhist life, surrounded by monasteries and the daily rhythm of kora.
Swayambhunath
An ancient hilltop Buddhist complex with layered history and broad views across Kathmandu.
